Artist Statement
For most of my life, I've been searching for something that's difficult to name. Painting became the way I learned to continue that search. Each painting is another attempt to move closer to quiet, clarity, and understanding beneath the surface.
I was born in a mountain town in southern Italy where forests, rivers, and open spaces shaped my early sense of the world. When my family came to Canada, I discovered another landscape that spoke the same language of stillness. Those places never left me.
Whether I'm painting a polar bear, a winter horizon, a bison, or a solitary tree, the subject isn't the destination. It is the vehicle. As detail falls away, I hope something more essential begins to emerge.
I don't think of a finished painting as a conclusion. Each one is another attempt to move a little closer. If the work offers anything, I hope it creates space to pause, to look more carefully, and perhaps to discover something of your own in the quiet.

Green ink on Japanese and Chinese paper — quicker, quieter studies made alongside the paintings, in the spirit of a brush tradition Gallé has long admired.
Biography
Francesco Gallé is a Canadian-Italian painter whose work explores the relationship between memory, place, and the quiet emotional spaces beneath everyday experience.
Born in southern Italy in 1966, he immigrated to Canada with his family in 1972, an experience that continues to shape his artistic vision. Working between Toronto and Italy, Gallé has developed a visual language guided by a search for simplicity, stillness, and emotional resonance.
His work has been exhibited in Canada and Italy, and includes commissions for the Gardiner Museum, the Bata Shoe Museum, and wineries in Tuscany. He is the recipient of the Certosa Award, and his work is held in private collections in Canada, Italy, Germany, and England.
Throughout his career, Gallé has remained committed to painting as a lifelong practice of observation and discovery.
